$25 Million Investment Expands Internet Across the Southern Tier, Provides Employment Opportunities & Brings Free Internet to Qualifying Households
Binghamton, N.Y., June 30, 2021 – Greenlight Networks, the fastest fiber-to-the-home provider in New York State, announces thesuccessful acquisition of Plexicomm, LLC, a Binghamton-based Internet solution provider. The combination of the two companies provides a platform for Greenlight to expand its fiber network across the Southern Tier with a plan to provide high-speed fiber Internet to 30,000 homes in this area by the end of 2022.
Founded in 2003 as a locally owned business in Binghamton, Plexicomm was the first company to bring residential fiber to the area and grew to become a regional leader with service available to more than 5,000 homes and hundreds of businesses. Greenlight plans to invest $25 million to enhance and expand this high-speed fiber optic network to additional neighborhoods and communities throughout Binghamton and across the greater Broome and Tioga County areas.
“We are excited to finalize the acquisition of Plexicomm and announce an investment that represents a strategic opportunity to bring New York’s fastest Internet to my hometown of Binghamton,” said Greenlight CEO and Binghamton native Mark Murphy. “Born and raised in this town, with friends and family still here, I have an affinity and appreciation for this community. We welcome the quality people and the valuable network infrastructure Plexicomm has built over the past 17 years into the Greenlight team and will quickly be growing our workforce and network reach in the Binghamton area.”
All 13 Plexicomm employees have transitioned to roles within Greenlight Networks. The company plans to add an additional 25 positions across its business by the end of 2022 to support growthplans in the Southern Tier region. Greenlight’s network expansion in the area will be led by Plexicomm’s founder Dan English, who has assumed the position of Greater Binghamton Region General Manager for Greenlight.
“Greenlight is dedicated to revolutionizing how customers connect and use the Internet, while making it cost friendly and as efficient as possible,” said English. “When the opportunity for Plexicomm to partner with Greenlight presented itself, it made perfect sense. This partnership means accelerated expansion in Binghamton, reaching more potential customers that are eager for high-speed Internetservices, in addition to benefiting the community in other waysincluding job creation.”
Greenlight’s growth plan for Binghamton and the surrounding areasis on two parallel paths. The first is to enhance the existing Plexicomm network to deliver Greenlight’s high-speed services; and the second is to expand the network to additional areas not currently served with fiber today.
“Greenlight’s plan to invest $25 million to expand high-speed internet access across the Southern Tier is a win for our community,” said Mayor Richard C. David. “Residents and local businesses need affordable, reliable internet access now more than ever. Greenlight will build on the innovative work Plexicomm started nearly two decades ago, creating quality local jobs in the process. I am excited to welcome Greenlight Networks to Binghamton and look forward to their success in our community.”
Starting today, residents in a portion of the West Side neighborhoodof Binghamton can begin placing pre-orders for Greenlight’s high-speed Internet service. The company will be enhancing the network in this area and Greenlight will begin the transition of residential fiber Internet products to the Greenlight network in the next few months.
“Reliable and fast internet connectivity is essential to how we live, work and play,” said Stacey Duncan, President & CEO of the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce and Executive Director of The Agency. “I am thrilled to welcome Greenlight Networks to our community and expand on the great work Plexicomm started. We look forward to a fruitful partnership into the future.”
As an approved provider of the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program, Greenlight will be offering this free Internet option to qualifying low-income households in the Binghamton area as it builds out its network.
